New Music Friday: May 21, 2021 releases

PopWaves is so excited to share the hottest new music releases in Pop music and beyond with you every week! Without any further ado, let's dive into this week's new releases.

Back Together by Amorphous featuring Kehlani (Amorphous/EMPIRE)

Amorphous, known for viral mashups of popular songs, teamed up with Kehlani for his first original single. This song is a breezy, R&B summer bop that says we can still be friends, but we aren't getting back together. Kehlani's vocals ride the beat and together they create a chill, yet fun song. This is Kehlani's third feature this year after releases with AJ Tracey and Pink Sweat$. We can't wait to hear what's next from Amorphous and Kehlani!

Drama Queen by Delacey (Hitmaker Music Group/Delicate Flower)

Delacey, known for co-writing Halsey's hit song "Without Me" and for her own songs like "Cruel Intentions" featuring G-Eazy, "My Man", and "The Subway Song" is back with her new single "Drama Queen." Drama Queen showcases a rawer, more Americana singer-songwriter leaning side of Delacey that we haven't seen as much of in her previous releases. Delacey conveys her truth through vulnerable and quite personal lyrics, similar to a journal entry that is meant for your eyes only. All in all, this is an incredible song that is well worth the listen, even if it doesn't fit in your typical genre boxes. Apply Pressure by Joelle James (12Tone Music LLC/VNLLAFCTRY, LLC)

Joelle James, known for writing Ella Mai's hit song "Boo'd Up" and for her collaborations with Chris Brown, continues her new music rollout with "Apply Pressure." Quite simply put, "Apply Pressure" is an R&B bop that belongs on R&B radio. It has the breezy and light feeling of Boo'd Up along with Joelle's powerhouse vocals. Don't sleep on Joelle James! Emotions by Madison Ryann Ward featuring Nick Green (Zelda House Records)

Madison Ryann Ward has been on my radar for a few years now. We found her through her YouTube covers and were blown away by her soulful tone. Her original material strikes us in the same way. Madison knows how to be vulnerable, convey emotion through music, and sing her face off! A few words to describe her new single "Emotions" would be vibey, soulful, and chill. Madison Ryann Ward delivers once again! Leave Before You Love Me by Marshmello and Jonas Brothers (Republic Records/Joytime Collective)

If you're also celebrating the Jonas Brothers and Kelsea Ballerini tour announcement, this is the perfect song for you! Marshmello and the Jonas Brothers released an earworm. This is one of the catchiest songs that I reviewed for this week. It will take a lot to get this song out of your head. Hopefully, we'll all be catching the Jonas Brothers live in a nearby city this year! Jealousy by Mike Posner featuring Blackbear (Monster Mountain LLC/Arista Records) This song took me by surprise on first listen in the best way possible! Mike Posner channeled his inner Bruno Mars and Michael Jackson for "Jealousy." "Jealousy" is funky and soulful with a big band-esque instrumental. It is a vintage breath of fresh air in the current music landscape. If Mike Posner releases a whole album like this, we will be 100% here for it! Handshakes by Naliya (Immersive/Sandlot/Interscope Records)

New Interscope signee Naliya released "Handshakes" as her first major-label single. "Handshakes" is a chill and vibey trap/R&B song that you may not catch all of the meaning in the first listen. Naliya's light and airy vocals complement the beat in a way that makes us want to listen to this song on repeat. We can't wait to hear what's next from Naliya! enough for you by Olivia Rodrigo (Olivia Rodrigo/Geffen Records) Olivia Rodrigo is having her breakout year! After coming out of seemingly nowhere with her smash hit "Drivers License," she has followed up with hit after hit leading up to the release of her album SOUR. Olivia shows off the reflective lyrics on "enough for you" just like she did on "Drivers License." The stripped-back production, reflective lyrics, and vocal delivery remind us of Julia Michaels. Olivia is primed for stardom and we can't wait to see her continue to rise to the top! OTHER NOTABLE RELEASES:

Sun Goes Down by Lil Nas X

Butter by BTS Our Song by Anne-Marie/Niall Horan

Blue Banisters by Lana Del Ray

Back Then, Right Now by Tenille Arts Stay tuned for a review of the new Twenty One Pilots album later in the week!
